Macquarie Shag

Leucocarbo purpurascens

The Macquarie Shag, scientifically known as Leucocarbo purpurascens, is a species of cormorant found in the sub-Antarctic region. These birds are known for their striking appearance, with dark plumage and a distinctive purplish sheen. They are adept divers and feed primarily on fish and crustaceans. Macquarie Shags are colonial nesters, often breeding in large numbers on coastal cliffs and rocky outcrops. They are well adapted to the harsh marine environment and are often seen perched on rocks or swimming near the shore. Despite their relatively remote habitat, they face threats from climate change and human disturbance.
