Madagascar Buttonquail, Turnix nigricollis, is a bird of Madagascar and nearby small islands, and it is found across much of the island in suitable places. It belongs to the buttonquail family and is a ground-living species. Its breeding system is unusual because the female is the more striking bird, while the male does the incubation and takes most of the responsibility for the chicks. It uses grassland, open woodland, forest edges, clearings, sandy and bushy ground, weedy areas and cultivated land, especially cassava fields.
