Hydrobates cheimomnestes
The Madeiran Storm Petrel, scientifically known as Hydrobates cheimomnestes, is a small seabird belonging to the Procellariidae family. It is endemic to the Madeira archipelago and breeds in rocky crevices and burrows. This species has a dark plumage with a distinct white rump and underwings. Madeiran Storm Petrels are nocturnal feeders, foraging for small fish, squid, and crustaceans in the open ocean. They are highly agile flyers, often skimming the waves with their feet touching the water. Due to its limited breeding range and potential threats from introduced predators, the conservation status of the Madeiran Storm Petrel is currently classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN.
