Hydrobates jabejabe
The Madeiran Storm Petrel, scientific name Hydrobates jabejabe, is a small seabird that belongs to the family Hydrobatidae. It is predominantly dark brown or black with a white rump and underwing. These birds are skilled flyers, using their long, narrow wings to glide effortlessly over the ocean's surface. Madeiran Storm Petrels are nocturnal, foraging for small fish and squid under the cover of darkness. They breed in burrows on remote islands and cliffs, often in large colonies. Their haunting calls can be heard echoing across the dark ocean at night. Due to their remote breeding sites and elusive nature, much of their life history remains a mystery to scientists.
