Madeiran Storm Petrel

Hydrobates melania

The Madeiran Storm Petrel (Hydrobates melania) is a small seabird that belongs to the family Hydrobatidae. It is primarily found in the North Atlantic Ocean, particularly around the Madeira archipelago. This species is known for its graceful flight and its habit of skimming the ocean surface while foraging for small fish and invertebrates. Madeiran Storm Petrels are nocturnal and nest in burrows on remote islands, where they lay a single egg. They are highly adapted for life at sea, with waterproof plumage and a keen sense of smell to locate food.
