Magellanic Diving Petrel

Pelecanoides magellani (Mathews, 1912)

Magellanic Diving Petrel, Pelecanoides magellani, is a petrel of the southern coast and island systems of Chile and Argentina, breeding on islets in Chilean fjords from there to Cape Horn and ranging outside the breeding season along the Gulf of Ancud, off Cape Horn and north to coastal Santa Cruz. It is a small, compact diving petrel and is set apart by the white crescent on the head, which contrasts with the dark cap. It nests in burrows on vegetated coastal slopes and nearshore islands, usually in dense colonies.
