Magellanic Snipe

Gallinago magellanica

The Magellanic Snipe, also known as the South American Snipe, is a medium-sized wader found in southern South America. It has a cryptic plumage, with mottled brown and buff feathers that provide excellent camouflage in its marshland and wetland habitats. This species is known for its distinctive aerial display during the breeding season, where it produces a 'drumming' sound by vibrating its outer tail feathers. The Magellanic Snipe forages for invertebrates and small insects in the mud and shallow water of its habitat. While its population is currently stable, the species faces threats from habitat loss and degradation.
