Magenta Petrel

Pterodroma magentae (Giglioli & Salvadori, 1869)

Magenta Petrel, Pterodroma magentae, breeds on Chatham Island in the Pacific Ocean east of New Zealand’s South Island and ranges outside the breeding season to the Pitcairn group, the Juan Fernandez islands and the Nazca Ridge. It is a petrel in the family Procellariidae and was described by Giglioli and Salvadori in 1869. Once thought lost for more than a century, it was found again in the 1970s. It nests in burrows beneath dense forest and lays a single egg, with both adults sharing incubation and chick feeding.
