Pterodroma magentae
The Magenta Petrel is a medium-sized seabird known for its striking plumage and graceful flight. With a wingspan of approximately 90-100 cm, these birds have predominantly dark plumage with a distinctive white patch on the rump. They are primarily nocturnal, foraging at sea for small fish, squid, and crustaceans. Breeding colonies are found on remote islands, where they nest in burrows and crevices. Unfortunately, the Magenta Petrel is critically endangered due to predation by introduced species and habitat degradation. Conservation efforts are underway to protect their remaining breeding sites and reduce threats to their survival.
