Maghreb Owl, Strix mauritanica, breeds in north-west Africa, from Morocco to Tunisia and Mauritania. It is an owl in the family Strigidae, first described by Witherby in 1905. Formerly treated as a subspecies of Tawny Owl, it was recognised as a full species in 2020. Its range is confined to north-western Africa, and it occupies a wide spread of habitats there, including urban areas and Mediterranean woodland. Its diet includes mammals, insects, birds, reptiles and amphibians. Its songs may be heard on calm nights, and it forms monogamous pairs that raise one small clutch each year.
