Malabar Barbet

Psilopogon malabaricus

The Malabar Barbet, also known as the Crimson-throated Barbet, is a colorful bird found in the Western Ghats of India. This medium-sized barbet has a distinctive red head, green body, and a broad black stripe running from the bill through the eye to the nape. It feeds on fruits, insects, and small vertebrates, and is known for its distinctive call, a series of melodious, repetitive notes. The Malabar Barbet inhabits evergreen and moist deciduous forests, often found in the canopy or mid-levels of the trees. Due to habitat loss and fragmentation, the species is facing increasing threats, leading to a decline in its population.
