Malabar Trogon

Arses telescopthalmus

The Malabar Trogon is a small, colorful bird found in the Western Ghats of India. It is known for its distinctive plumage, with males displaying vibrant green upperparts and a crimson belly, while females have a brownish plumage. These birds inhabit dense evergreen and moist deciduous forests, where they forage for insects and small fruits. They are often observed perching quietly in the canopy, making occasional short flights to catch prey. The Malabar Trogon plays a vital role in the ecosystem as a seed disperser for various plant species. Although not currently assessed by the IUCN, their population may face threats from habitat loss and fragmentation.
