It belongs to the Muscicapidae and was described by Vigors in 1831. It is closely tied to dense riverine forest, where it uses dark undergrowth and the edges of rocky hill streams and rivers. It is also found in secondary growth and plantations, from foothills to 2200 m, and may move down to the plains in the rainy season.
