Malayan Night Heron

Gorsachius melanolophus

The Malayan Night Heron (Gorsachius melanolophus) is a medium-sized heron found in Southeast Asia. It has a distinctive black crest on its head, a brownish body, and long legs. This species is primarily nocturnal, foraging in shallow water for small fish, amphibians, and insects. During the day, it roosts in dense vegetation near water bodies. The Malayan Night Heron is known for its secretive behavior and is often difficult to observe due to its elusive nature. It is typically silent, but may emit a series of low, hoarse croaks during the breeding season. This heron is primarily found in lowland forests, mangroves, and wetlands.
