Maleo

Macrocephalon maleo

The Maleo is a large, chicken-sized bird native to the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. It is known for its unique nesting behavior, where females lay their eggs in warm sand or soil and rely on the sun's heat to incubate them. This species is primarily ground-dwelling and is characterized by its distinctive helmet-like casque on the top of its head. Maleos are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of insects, fruits, and seeds. Due to habitat loss and hunting pressure, the Maleo is considered vulnerable to extinction.
