Malleefowl, Leipoa ocellata, is a bird of the mallee country of southern Australia, breeding from south-west Western Australia to east-central New South Wales. It belongs to the megapodes and was described by Gould in 1840. The species is a stocky ground bird and the only living member of its genus. Its most distinctive feature is the huge nesting mound built by the male. It lives in semiarid mallee scrub on the edges of more fertile country, and its breeding range is now split into separate populations across southern Australia.
