Mangrove Finch

Geospiza septentrionalis

The Mangrove Finch (Geospiza septentrionalis) is a small, critically endangered bird species endemic to the Galápagos Islands. With a distinctive appearance, it has a short, pointed beak and a mottled brown plumage. This species is known for its unique foraging behavior, often using tools to extract insects from dead wood. Mangrove Finches primarily inhabit the mangrove forests of Isabela and Fernandina Islands, where they rely on the availability of insects and nectar. Due to habitat destruction, invasive species, and disease, the population of Mangrove Finches has drastically declined, making them one of the rarest birds in the world.
