Todiramphus winchelli
The Mangrove Kingfisher (Todiramphus winchelli) is a striking bird found in the mangrove forests of northern Australia and New Guinea. This medium-sized kingfisher is known for its vibrant blue and white plumage, with a distinctive turquoise back and wings. It has a strong, pointed bill and a short tail. Mangrove Kingfishers are skilled hunters, feeding on small fish, crustaceans, and insects. They are often seen perched on branches or hovering over water before diving to catch their prey. These birds are well adapted to their coastal habitat and are excellent fliers. While not currently considered threatened, their mangrove habitat is increasingly under pressure from human development and climate change.
