Mangrove Kingfisher

Todiramphus recurvirostris

The Mangrove Kingfisher (Todiramphus recurvirostris) is a striking bird found in the mangrove forests of Australasia. With its vibrant blue and white plumage, it is a sight to behold as it perches on branches or dives into the water to catch small fish and crustaceans. This medium-sized kingfisher has a long, sturdy bill and a distinctive call that echoes through the mangroves. Its breeding season is often marked by elaborate courtship displays and the excavation of nest burrows in the soft mud. Mangrove Kingfishers play a vital role in the ecosystem by controlling populations of small aquatic creatures. However, habitat loss and degradation threaten their populations in some areas.
