Mantanani Scops Owl

Otus mantananensis (Sharpe, 1892)

Strigidae — Owls

Mantanani Scops Owl, Otus mantananensis, breeds in the Philippines and is tied to small islands in the Oriental Region. It is an owl of wooded places, including coconut groves and stands of Casuarina equisetifolia, and it is also recorded from islands between Borneo and the Philippines. Its range is very restricted and split across several islands, with forest loss from logging and clearance affecting the habitat it depends on. Four subspecies are recognised, including forms from southern Palawan, the southern Calamian Islands, Romblon and the Sibutu Islands.
