Markham's Storm Petrel

Hydrobates markhami (Salvin, 1883)

Markham's Storm Petrel, Hydrobates markhami, breeds in the Pacific Ocean off Peru and northern Chile, with colonies on San Gallan and Independencia islands and in the Atacama Desert up to 50 km inland. Outside the breeding season it ranges across the eastern Pacific to southern Mexico, the Galápagos and central Chile. It is a member of the northern storm petrels and is a seabird of the Pacific. The species was described by Salvin in 1883. It is a colonial breeder, nesting in natural cavities in salt crusts.
