Mascarene Parrot, Mascarinus mascarinus, is an extinct parrot of Réunion in the Indian Ocean, within the Mascarene islands. It belongs to the Psittaculidae and was described by Linnaeus in 1771. It was the island’s endemic parrot and is known from only two preserved specimens, now in Paris and Vienna. The bird had a large red bill, red legs, bare red skin around the eyes and nostrils, a black facial mask and a long rounded tail with some white feathers. Its extinction date is uncertain, but it is thought to have disappeared before 1800.
