Mascarene swiftlet

Phedina borbonica

The Mascarene swiftlet (Phedina borbonica) is a small, fast-flying bird found in the Mascarene Islands of the Indian Ocean. It has a streamlined body, short forked tail, and long, narrow wings, which enable it to perform agile aerial maneuvers. These swiftlets are predominantly insectivorous, catching their prey while in flight. They are known for their distinctive high-pitched calls and their ability to navigate through complex aerial environments. The Mascarene swiftlet nests in caves and crevices, forming colonies with other individuals. Although not currently considered threatened, their populations may be vulnerable to habitat loss and disturbance.
