Anatidae — Ducks, Geese, Swans

Mascarene Teal, Anas theodori, is a duck in the family Anatidae and order Anseriformes. It was recorded from Réunion and Mauritius in the western and central Mascarenes of the south-west Indian Ocean. The bird is known from historical accounts and fossil material, and it is now extinct. It was a small duck, with one contemporary description calling it grey. Its limb bones indicate that it could fly normally, which would have allowed movement between the two islands. It is thought to have disappeared after heavy hunting and pressure from introduced animals, especially cats.
