Maui Akepa

Loxops ochraceus Rothschild, 1893

Fringillidae — Finches, Euphonias

Maui Akepa, Loxops ochraceus, is an extinct finch from Maui in the Hawaiian Islands, where it was endemic. It was first described by Rothschild in 1893. Once widespread across the island, it later declined as introduced mosquitoes, other animals and changed plant communities altered its habitat. The last confirmed record was in 1988. It was removed from the Endangered Species Act in 2023 on the grounds of extinction, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposed that status in 2021.
