Maui-nui Akialoa

Akialoa lanaiensis (Rothschild, 1893)

Fringillidae — Finches, Euphonias

Maui-nui Akialoa, Akialoa lanaiensis, is an extinct Hawaiian honeycreeper from the family Fringillidae, recorded from Lānaʻi in the Hawaiian Islands and formerly present on Maui and Molokaʻi as well. It lived in forests above 200 m and is known from three specimens taken on Lānaʻi in 1892, together with fossil material from the other islands. Its long bill was used to probe bark and flowers. The species was lost through habitat destruction and disease, with invasive species also possibly contributing.
