Mauritian Night Heron

Nycticorax mauritianus

The Mauritian Night Heron, scientifically known as Nycticorax mauritianus, is a medium-sized heron that is endemic to the island of Mauritius. This elusive bird is characterized by its predominantly dark plumage, with a glossy greenish-black crown and back, and a contrasting white throat and breast. It has a stout, powerful bill and distinctive red eyes. The Mauritian Night Heron is primarily nocturnal, foraging in wetland habitats for fish, crustaceans, and insects. Due to habitat loss and predation by introduced species, this species is considered critically endangered, with conservation efforts focused on protecting its remaining forested habitats and controlling invasive predators.
