Mauritian shelduck

Alopochen mauritiana

The Mauritian shelduck, also known as the Mauritian duck, is a species of duck endemic to Mauritius. It is a medium-sized waterfowl with a distinctive chestnut-brown plumage and a dark green head. The species is known for its strong, pointed bill and long neck. Mauritian shelducks are primarily found in freshwater wetlands and marshes, where they feed on aquatic plants, small invertebrates, and occasionally small fish. Due to habitat loss and hunting, the Mauritian shelduck is considered critically endangered, with only a few individuals remaining in the wild. Conservation efforts are underway to protect and restore their natural habitat.
