Melanesian white-eye

Zosterops novaeguineae

The Melanesian white-eye (Zosterops novaeguineae) is a small passerine bird found in the forests and woodlands of New Guinea and nearby islands. It has a distinctive white eye-ring, olive-green upperparts, and a yellow belly. This species is known for its acrobatic foraging behavior, often hanging upside down to feed on insects and nectar. Melanesian white-eyes are social birds, forming small flocks and engaging in cooperative breeding. They play a vital role in pollination and seed dispersal within their forest habitats. Despite facing habitat loss due to deforestation, the Melanesian white-eye is currently not considered threatened.
