It was described by Hellmayr in 1907. It lives in wet páramo with scattered bushes at 3,000 to 4,100 m. The species is monotypic and is part of a superspecies with Apolinar's Wren and Grass Wren. It is mostly sedentary, though it may shift with altitude and is thought to leave some places in the rainy season.
