Aphelocoma ultramarina
The Mexican Jay (Aphelocoma ultramarina) is a medium-sized bird found in the oak woodlands and pine-oak forests of Mexico and the southwestern United States. These social and intelligent birds are known for their striking blue plumage, prominent crest, and bold white markings on the face and throat. Mexican Jays are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of nuts, seeds, fruits, insects, and small vertebrates. They are often observed foraging in groups, using their strong bills to crack open acorns and other food items. Their vocalizations are varied and include a range of calls and squawks. Mexican Jays are important seed dispersers and play a key role in the ecology of their habitats.
