Micronesian Megapode

Megapodius eremita

The Micronesian Megapode, or Megapodius eremita, is a ground-dwelling bird native to the Micronesian islands. This species is known for its unique breeding behavior, as it relies on geothermal heat to incubate its eggs rather than using body heat. The Megapode is a medium-sized bird with a distinctive brown plumage and a prominent red facial patch. It forages on the forest floor for insects, seeds, and fallen fruits. Due to habitat loss and predation, the Micronesian Megapode faces conservation challenges.
