Mottled Piculet, Picumnus nebulosus, is a woodpecker of south-eastern Brazil, north-eastern Argentina and northern Uruguay. It belongs to the family Picidae and was described by Sundevall in 1866. Its range is concentrated in the Atlantic forest region, with records also from Araucaria forest, gallery forest, bamboo thickets, scrubland and wooded savannah. It is a small piculet with a black-capped male, while females lack the red forehead patch and show white spotting across the cap. The species is mostly sedentary, breeds from October to December, and is known for brief calls and irregular drumming, especially on bamboo.
