Mottled Wood Owl

Strix ocellata (Lesson, RP, 1839)

Mottled Wood Owl, Strix ocellata, is an owl of the Oriental Region, breeding in India and Myanmar. It is a bird of gardens and lightly wooded places, including thin deciduous forest near dry thorn forest and farmland. This species is a large owl with no ear tufts, and its face shows fine concentric black and white barring. The plumage is mottled and vermiculated in reddish brown and white, with a white chin, an orange eyelid and a dark brown iris. The tail is narrowly barred in brown and black.
