The Mountain Chickadee (Poecile gambeli) is a small songbird found in the mountainous regions of western North America. It has a distinctive black cap and bib with white cheeks and grayish-blue wings and back. This energetic and sociable bird is known for its cheerful chick-a-dee-dee-dee call and acrobatic foraging behavior. Mountain Chickadees prefer coniferous forests and mixed woodlands, where they forage for insects, seeds, and berries. They build cup-shaped nests in tree cavities and are known to form mixed-species flocks during the non-breeding season. While their populations are generally stable, habitat loss and climate change pose potential threats to their future.
