Mourning Dove

Zenaida macroura

The Mourning Dove, also known as the American Mourning Dove, is a medium-sized bird with a length of 9-13 inches and a wingspan of 17-18 inches. It is characterized by its soft, mournful cooing and graceful, swift flight. This species is widespread across North and Central America, often found in open habitats such as fields, parks, and residential areas. Mourning Doves primarily feed on seeds and grains and are known for their gentle, peaceful nature. Their plumage is mainly shades of gray and brown, with a distinctive black spot on their cheeks. Despite being a common and adaptable species, they face threats from habitat loss and hunting in some regions.
