Mourning Sierra Finch Rhopospina fruticeti lives in south-western South America, where it breeds across the Andes and nearby regions. It is a tanager in the family Thraupidae, first described by Kittlitz in 1833. The species is stocky, with a long tail and a medium-sized bill, and the sexes look different. Three subspecies are recognised. Its range includes dry montane scrub, Polylepis forest edges, cultivated ground and Patagonian shrub-steppe, and it can occur from sea level to 4,200 m. It feeds on seeds and invertebrates, and nests in small dense shrubs.
