Murphy's Petrel

Pterodroma ultima

Murphy's Petrel (Pterodroma ultima) is a medium-sized seabird belonging to the Procellariidae family. It has a dark greyish-brown plumage with a white belly and underwing. This species is known for its long, slender wings and graceful flight patterns, often gliding effortlessly over the open ocean. Murphy's Petrel is primarily a pelagic species, spending most of its life at sea, only returning to land to breed. It nests in burrows on remote islands in the southern Pacific Ocean. These petrels are highly migratory, traveling vast distances across the ocean in search of food, which mainly consists of small fish and squid. Despite their wide-ranging distribution, they are vulnerable to threats such as habitat destruction, pollution, and accidental bycatch in fishing gear.
