Namaqua Woodpecker

Chloropicus namaquus

The Namaqua Woodpecker is a small to medium-sized woodpecker found in southern Africa. It has distinctive black and white plumage with a red crown on the male. This species is known for its drumming sound, which it uses to communicate and establish territory. The Namaqua Woodpecker primarily feeds on insects and larvae, foraging in acacia woodlands and savannas. It excavates nest holes in dead trees and branches. While not currently considered threatened, habitat loss and degradation are potential future threats to this species.
