Caprimulgus natalensis
The Natal Nightjar (Caprimulgus natalensis) is a nocturnal bird species found in sub-Saharan Africa. It is known for its distinctive churring call that can be heard at dusk and dawn. This medium-sized nightjar has cryptic plumage, with intricate patterns that provide excellent camouflage against tree bark and leaf litter. It primarily feeds on flying insects, which it catches in mid-air using its wide gape and bristle-like rictal bristles. The Natal Nightjar is often found in open woodlands, savannas, and grasslands, where it nests on the ground, relying on its camouflage to avoid detection. Although not currently considered threatened, habitat loss and degradation are potential threats to its populations.
