Negros Bleeding-heart

Gallicolumba platenae

The Negros Bleeding-heart is a medium-sized ground dove native to the Philippines. It is named for the distinctive red patch on its breast that resembles a bleeding wound. These doves are known for their shy and elusive nature, often found foraging on the forest floor for seeds and fallen fruits. They are also known for their unique courtship display, where the male puffs up its chest and coos to attract a mate. The species is threatened by habitat loss due to deforestation and hunting for the pet trade.
