Branta sandvicensis
The Nene, also known as the Hawaiian goose, is a species of goose endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. It is the world's rarest goose and has a distinctive appearance with a black head and bill, buff-colored cheeks, and a mottled brown body. Nene are primarily herbivorous, feeding on grasses, seeds, and berries. They inhabit a variety of habitats including grasslands, shrublands, and coastal areas. Due to habitat loss, hunting, and introduced predators, the Nene population declined drastically, leading to its classification as endangered. Conservation efforts have helped in the recovery of the species, but it remains vulnerable to threats such as habitat destruction and climate change.
