Turnix novaecaledoniae
The New Caledonian Buttonquail, also known as Turnix novaecaledoniae, is a small ground-dwelling bird species found in the forests and grasslands of New Caledonia. This elusive bird is known for its secretive nature and cryptic plumage, which provides excellent camouflage in its preferred habitats. The New Caledonian Buttonquail primarily feeds on seeds, insects, and small invertebrates, foraging among leaf litter and dense vegetation. Due to habitat loss and predation by introduced species, the conservation status of this species is currently listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN.
