New Ireland Dwarf Kingfisher

Ceyx mulcatus Rothschild & Hartert, EJO, 1914

Alcedinidae — Kingfishers

New Ireland Dwarf Kingfisher, Ceyx mulcatus, is a kingfisher of the Bismarck Archipelago, breeding on Lavongai, New Ireland, Dyaul, Tabar and the Lihir Islands. It lives in subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests. It was described by Rothschild and Hartert in 1914. Once treated as a subspecies of the variable dwarf kingfisher, it was raised to species level after a molecular study in 2013 showed that the island forms had diverged markedly. The former variable dwarf kingfisher was then split, and the name was changed to the Moluccan dwarf kingfisher.
