New Zealand Rock Wren

Xenicus longipes

The New Zealand Rock Wren (Xenicus longipes) is a small, alpine passerine bird endemic to the South Island of New Zealand. It is known for its distinctive high-pitched calls and agile, rock-hopping behavior. The Rock Wren has a mottled brown and gray plumage, providing excellent camouflage in its rocky habitat. It forages for insects and spiders among boulders and scree slopes, using its long, slender bill to probe into crevices. Due to its specialized alpine habitat, the Rock Wren is vulnerable to disturbances and habitat loss caused by human activities and introduced predators.
