New Zealand Snipe

Coenocorypha iredalei

The New Zealand Snipe (Coenocorypha iredalei) is a small, elusive bird endemic to New Zealand. It is known for its cryptic plumage, mottled brown and buff, which provides excellent camouflage in its forest and grassland habitats. These solitary birds are primarily nocturnal, foraging for invertebrates and small seeds under the cover of darkness. The New Zealand Snipe is a critically endangered species due to habitat loss and predation by introduced mammals. Conservation efforts are underway to protect its remaining habitat and control invasive species.
