Newell's Shearwater

Puffinus newelli Henshaw, 1900

Newell's Shearwater, Puffinus newelli, is a petrel in the Hawaiian Islands, breeding on Lehua north of Niihau and on montane Kauai, Molokai and Hawaii. It is a seabird of the family Procellariidae and was described by Henshaw in 1900. At sea it ranges beyond the islands, reaching waters south of Japan and the Mariana Islands, and also the south-west Pacific near New Caledonia, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. It is the only seabird endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, and its Hawaiian name, ʻaʻo, comes from its call.
