North Island Brown Kiwi, Apteryx mantelli, breeds in the North Island of New Zealand, where it occurs in four main areas: Northland and its islands, the Coromandel, and the eastern and western parts of the island. It is a flightless kiwi of the family Apterygidae. The bird is nocturnal and has a long bill. Its feathers are brown, spiky and streaked, and females are larger than males. It lays eggs that are exceptionally large in relation to its body size.
