Philesturnus carunculatus
The North Island saddleback is a medium-sized songbird endemic to New Zealand. It is known for its striking appearance, with glossy black plumage, a vibrant chestnut saddle across the back, and a fleshy orange wattle at the base of the bill. These birds are highly territorial and form monogamous pairs. They are adept at foraging for insects and invertebrates in the forest understorey, using their strong legs and sharp beaks. The North Island saddleback is also known for its melodious and varied song, which it uses for communication and territorial defense.
