North Island Snipe

Coenocorypha barrierensis Oliver, 1955

North Island Snipe, Coenocorypha barrierensis, was a bird of New Zealand in the sandpiper family, Scolopacidae, with breeding records from North, Browns and Little Barrier islands. It was described by Oliver in 1955 and is now extinct. The species was once found on the North Island and survived on Little Barrier Island until 1870, with a possible later record from Browns Island in 1820. It was similar to other Coenocorypha snipes, but could be told from the South Island snipe by the pale area on the chin and throat, the lack of lower belly barring, crescent marks on the upper belly and a less rufous overall look.
