Porphyrio hochstetteri
The North Island Takahe, scientifically known as Porphyrio hochstetteri, is a flightless bird endemic to New Zealand. It is a large, blue and green bird with a distinctive red beak and shield. The species was thought to be extinct until it was rediscovered in 1948. The North Island Takahe inhabits wetland and grassland areas, foraging for vegetation and small invertebrates.
